Vermont, located in New England, is known as the Green Mountain state.

Vermont was originally inhabited by the Abenaki, Algonquian, Iroquois, and Mohican Native American tribes. It is believed the first European to see Vermont was Jacques Cartier, in 1535. In 1609, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain claimed the area of Lake Champlain for New France. He dubbed the mountains les Vert Monts (the Green Mountains). The first British settlers arrived in 1690, settling near what is now Addison. Fort Dummer built in southern Vermont in 1724 was the first permanent British settlement. Vermont became a British territory after the Seven Years War also known as the French and Indian War. Vermont remained an independent republic until 1791 when it became the 14th state in the union.

Vermont is famous for its scenery, dairy products, and maple syrup. Many tourists enjoy visiting in the autumn to see the beautiful foliage and in winter to ski.
